Seasonal or annual storage of energy is economical only if the storage material is extremely cheap; water, salt, rock, and soil seem to be the only candidates for long-term heat storage. Storage of electricity is costly, and probably not practical for periods longer than a few hours. Solar energy systems without long term storage must have complete backup. For solar thermal installations oil is an excellent backup. Because of its high volumetric energy density it is easy to store, and as a clean fuel it can be burned easily.
